Welcome!Log InCreate A New ProfileMessage ListNew TopicPrint View Hi, I been behind on my FCP X studies been stuck in Studio 2 for awhile now in my own little world. Recently I up graded one of my macs to Mt. Lion and quickly found out that FCP Studio 2 is no longer supported. ugh! So I'm looking to move on into FCP X here is my problem, I know I can get Compressor in the App store. But what would I use for DVD authoring? I know FCP X has simple authoring tools. But I do some pretty complex menus and things with DVDSP now. So if anyone has a idea or some other software please let me know. Thanks ahead of time. There are two things you can do: 1. Use one of your other Macs to author your DVDs. Use the ML Mac (this should be your fastest machine) for FCP10 + Compressor and use another Mac with FCS2 to author your DVDs with DVDSP. You can easily create a small LAN over Ethernet between your two machines to bring files over from one to the other. 2. Do everything on your ML Mac I guess you still have a Snow Leopard install disc somewhere. Put it in your ML Mac and do an Optional Install of Rosetta. Once Rosetta is installed on your ML Mac you will be able to install FCS2 along with FCP10 on this Mac. If you wish you can install just DVDSP and not the other CS2 apps on your ML Mac. NOTE: There have been reports that this optional Rosetta install method works for some, not for others. It mostly depends on the type of computer you are using. Anyway if you have more than one Mac my personal choice would certainly be the first solution. When we migrated from FCP7 to FCP10 we installed both on all of our systems, just in case. But after six months we realized we never touched FCP7 nor any of the older apps anymore so we deleted FCS from the production machines and we just kept one machine with Final Cut Studio for opening old projects and authoring DVDs. This machine has been feeling very lonely lately ((-: Best wishes, Ronny Thanks Ronny for the reply! So it sounds like there is no good replacement for DVDSP. So here is another quick question. Through FCP X can I put multiple things on one DVD? Say I'm making a TV Show and I want to put 5 shows on one DVD is that still posable? See I have a video production company and my father has a public domain movie company that sales on Amazon eBay and his own site. Well he does a lot of Photoshop layer things and puts them in DVDSP I no he might not be able to do that if he ever moves on without keeping and old computer around. But he will have to be able to put multiple items on a DVD. I don't know. I was hoping there was something to take the place of DVDSP I mean its like leaving one of my kids behind. Thanks again for the help. You raise a good point about Mt. Lion. Does it support FCP Studio 3 and FCP 7? FCS 3 and FCP7 install and run perfectly on Mountain Lion. Only FCS2 and earlier are a bit more difficult to install. When you already have FCS2 installed on an earlier OS and you update to Mountain Lion over this OS there is no problem at all. Best wishes, Ronny That's good to know, Ronny. I have FCP Studio 3 and FCP 7 and am preparing to try FCP X. But I have a couple of projects in FCP 7 that I want to continue with. I am using a terrific stabilizing app called CS Lock & Load which I hope will not be affected by Mt. Lion. As far as making DVDs, I would like to continue using DVDSP4. That is, output a self-contained QT movie from FCP X, use Compressor and then go to DVDSP4. Does that sound like a workable plan? Thanks, Phil Phil, That does sound like a very workable plan. You won't have any trouble using both FCS3 and FCP10 on the same ML machine. Many of us have done this while transitioning from one to the other. In FCP10 you share your edit as a Master file and you drop the file into DVDSP for authoring. Lock and Load indeed works like a charm. Did you know it is available as a plugin for FCP10? It appears in the FCP10 Effects Browser and when you drop it on a clip you get on-screen controls in your Viewer to analyze and stabilize your footage. The Inspector offers many different options to tweak your stabilizing. And what's more: in FCP10 you don't need to render to view your stabilized clip. Best wishes, Ronny Very cool about Lock and Load, Ronny. It has saved my butt on many projects. Are you saying that it comes as part of FCPX or that I will have to purchase it again? Phil FCP10 has a very decent stabilizing feature, but not as powerful as a dedicated stabilizer such as L&Load. You can purchase the 'Lock and Load X' stabilizer plugin from CoreMelt: [www.coremelt.com] Not really cheap at 99 bucks, but this newest version is even more powerful and certainly much faster than the legacy one you have and it will work with FCP7 as well as with FCP10. As the new plugin has been completely re-written there seems to be no upgrade price from the older one. Best wishes, Ronny Thanks for the info on the new Lock & Load, Ronny, but I guess I'm also asking if the one I do have and use with FCP 7 will work with FCP X or will I have to purchase it again? I understand that you say the new one is far improved but the one I bought last August cost me $150 and I'd prefer to not have to buy another right away if it will work with FCP X. Phil Phil, I have found no official information about an upgrade path from the FCP7 plugin to L&L X, but (off the record) I know at least one person who has received a free upgrade from L&L to L&L X. I suggest you contact CoreMelt about this: [www.coremelt.com] Best wishes, Ronny Ronny, I just checked and the version of L & L that I am running which I purchased last August for use with FCP7 is Lock & Load X. The same one that you're talking about? Thanks, Phil Yep that's the same. All you have to do is install FCP10.0.7 and re-install Lock&Load X. The stabilizer will appear in your FCPX Effects Browser as 'C2 Lock & Load' (see attached screenshot). Best wishes, Ronny You know, Ronny, I see it in my FCP 7 Effects Browser but don't see it in my Applications. Sorry to be a pain but where is it hiding on my HD? I even looked in Plug-ins & didn't see it. My Spotlight search didn't show it. In any case, I will write to Coremelt. Thanks so much for all your valuable support and help. Phil Phil, Look in the Library > PLugins > Fxplug folder. Inside you will find the Lock & Load fxplug plugins. If you also see a 'Lock & Load FCP X.fxplug' icon in this folder this means the plugin has already been installed for FCPX as well. If you already have FCPX installed you can check if C2 Lock&Load is available in the Effects Browser. If FCPX is not installed yet you will have to do this first, then run the original L&L installer you have received when you have purchased Lock&Load. Best wishes, Ronny Yup, there it is, Ronny. What I see is 'Lock & Load X.fxplug' & 'Lock & Load.fxplug' but no 'Lock & Load FCP X.fxplug' icon. So that means I will have to purchase the new one because I'm assuming the one I have will not work in FCPX. I will write Coremelt re: getting a free upgrade. Thanks so much, Phil You have the 'Lock & Load X.fcplug' in your folder, this means that the plugin you have purchased is for Lock & Load X and you won't have to purchase it again to use it in FCPX. But as FCPX was not yet on your system when you installed the L&L plugin, the 'Lock & Load FCP X.fxplug' file was not installed in your Library. So the best thing to do is to contact CoreMelt. Because you already have a valid license for Lock & Load X my guess is that the only thing you will need to do is to install FCPX, then download the L&L installer from the Coremelt website again, run the installer and everything will be all-right. Best wishes, Ronny CoreMelt distributed a free update to Lock&LoadX for those who purchased it previously. Just download and install if memory serves me. It'll install the right things in the right places for FCPX. when i had to replace my video edit MacPro and upgraded to FCPX, i successfully installed DVDSP (nothing else) from the install discs of FCP7, went through the updates and it works fine. i did upgrade to the latest and greatest Compressor Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
How I liberated my Winkhub from the Cloud
TL;DR; I rooted my Winkhub over the UART connection and then wrote a small Go web service to allow me to turn my lights on and off from my phone.
Recently I became interested in controlling my lights automatically. I wanted to implement a timer that could flip the lights on and off during certain hours of the day, and to create a snooze button that disables the lights from shutting off when I still needed them on after the shut-off hour. I'm currently using one of those cheap hardware outlet timers.

To 'Load and lock' refers to the operation of the M1 Garand Rifle, a standard WWII army rifle, where one would load a single round into the Garand, and then strike the bolt handle with the heel of the hand thereby forcing a round into the chamber and ensuring that it was fully closed and locked into place. LOCK&LOCK NEWS. Jan 16, 2020 The variant 'load(ed) and lock(ed)' is found since at least 1815. The phrase may have originated from the use of gunlocks on naval artillery (in use by the Royal Navy since 1745); as gunlocks were not required for firing (a lintstock could be used) it may have been necessary to specify cannon was 'locked' as well as loaded. All good tools require some care in use to work to their best. In your wood shop, cutting edge maintenance is a variable cost that can be controlled by optimizing the chip load of your cutting tools. The combination of three factors will affect the life of the cutting tools before renewal of the edge (either by replacing an insert knife, or having a fixed tool resharpened).
I came across the Winkhub while browsing the light section in HomeDepot. I did a quick search to see which of these 'Smart' devices could easily be rooted because I did not want the controls routed through a third party service. I also thought this would be a fun challenge to try hacking on some hardware. Sadly, the PHP hack I had read about was no longer in the firmware of the Winkhub I purchased. That led me to a crash course in hacking this thing with the UART connection and learning how to cross compile Go so I could run my own programs on the device.
I've listed all the resources I used at the bottom.

Coremelt Lock And Load X Serial Numbers
- WinkhubI picked mine up at a HomeDepot and paid $50. I should have bought it online since they have a deal that combines 2 light bulbs and a hub for the same price.
- GE Link Light bulbAt least one light to test with
- FT232RL FTDI USB to TTL Serial AdapterThis adapter has a jumper to to switch between 3.3v and 5v. The Winkhub uses 3.3v
- Female and Male Wiring HarnessesI bought this mainly because I needed the wires. I'm not sure how to safely use that USB to Serial TTL adapter with the jumper.
- Twist tie or a short wireI just used one I found in the kitchen off some groceries
- Some LEGO bricks to build a stand for convenience
- Hex torx screwdriver
- Multimeteroptional
- Linux(Mac & Windows should work too)
I should note that some of the stuff I am doing with the wires is probably questionable.

Coremelt Lock And Load X Serial Number
I haven't really done any hardware hacking in the past like this, and hardly know what I am doing. I figured this out by watching a bunch of youtube videos and reading some blog posts on how to use a multimeter and basic usage of a UART connector.
Device Teardown
I did not connect my hub to the wireless router before doing any of these steps in fear of the firmware updating to block me out.
Fresh out of the box open the Winkhub by removing the 4 screws on the back with a Hex torx screwdriver.
Pull the circuit board out and mount it on a stand. I used one made out of LEGO bricks.
Place jumper on the 3.3v and center pin
At this point the Winkhub should still not be plugged into power. Attach wires to the GND (Ground), TX (Transmit), & (RX) Receive. Note that you will want to on UART side connect the TX to the RX connection and the RX to the TX connection. The ground connects to ground in both and the power is left empty.
Place the wires into the UART connection on the hub.
I held my wires into place with the help of some LEGO bricks. I've seen other people solder on adapters. I found no issues with plugging my wires in without soldering them.
Plug-in the USB cable for the serial adapter if it isn't already.
Things I wish I knew ahead of time:
- minicom can record logs to a file
reboot -f
is how you reboot the Winkhub. Nothing seems to happen without the-f
flag- The Winkhub does not seem to like spaces in the wifi passwords
- Running
ping
inside minicom will disable reading any input and I can only get out of it by rebooting the Winkhub. I'm sure there must be some better way to kill it.
Setup the serial connection
I used minicom to communicate with the serial adapter.
Raspbian: sudo apt-get install minicom
OSX: brew install minicom
$ minicom -s

At this point you should be able to plug the Winkhub into the wall. I used a surge protector so I could easily turn the Winkhub on and off. This is very useful later when it comes time to short the pin.

This is the output I recorded after powering mine on the first time:

Power off & connect UART
This is where things become a little questionable. It was late when I did this and I realized that I forgot to order a wire that is needed to short the NAND chip by connecting a pin 29 to the ground. I scrounged through my house and realized I probably had some twistie ties. I wasn't sure if they would be enough to conduct a signal so I tested it by stripping the paper off of the wire ends and connecting one end of a wire to a battery and the other to a tip on my multi meter. Once I saw that it had continuity, I figured it would work. I wrapped the twisty tie around the edge of the ground pin going into the UART connector on the circuit board and left the other end loose.

Careful not to touch excess wire to RX & TX pins.
Pin 29 should be connected to ground 1 second after power is turned on.
It took me many failed attempts to figure out that I needed to connect the wire to the ground at about 1 second after turning on the power or as soon as the LED light turns on. I had trouble finding information on how soon to connect the pin to the ground. I've listed the bad output at the bottom for reference.
Success! At this point you should stop touching pin 29 to the ground.
